Carer at Home Scheme subsidy raised to €9,000 annually

The government is raising the subsidy under the Carer at Home Scheme, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Active Ageing said in a statement.

Elderly beneficiaries can now receive up to €9,000 annually, as previously announced in the Budget 2026.

The Carer at Home Scheme provides financial assistance to elderly individuals who require full-time support, enabling them to employ a carer while continuing to live in their own home rather than moving into residential care. More than 1100 elderly people already benefit from the scheme.

This policy is part of a broader effort to support independent living and keep elderly people within their communities and families.

Additionally, it was announced that the Dingli Active Ageing Centre will be renovated to provide a more modern environment for activities. The renovation is expected to enhance facilities for the growing number of elderly participants attending activities there.

It was said that 3300 elderly people attended active ageing centres last year, and this number is expected to exceed 4300 this year.

Agreements currently being finalised are expected to expand training opportunities offered at active ageing centres in the coming months.

“There is no greater satisfaction than seeing the numbers of elderly people resorting to services, and schemes grow and increase,” said Parliamentary Secretary Malcolm Paul Agius Galea.

Active Ageing and Community Care CEO Steve Agius said the aim remains to ensure elderly people “continue living an active life in the comfort of their home” through a wide range of community services.
