Mqabba Local Council secures new site for headquarters

A site in Mqabba has been officially devolved to the local council, paving the way for the development of a new headquarters aimed at improving services for residents.

The Ministry for Culture, Lands and Local Government confirmed that the property-measuring just over 84 square metres and located in Karmen Ciantar Street-has been transferred from the Lands Authority to the Mqabba Local Council under a five-year leasehold agreement. The site is intended to be developed into a more accessible and efficient administrative hub for the community.

Owen Bonnici said the project reflects the Government’s continued confidence in local councils. He emphasised that the initiative forms part of a broader commitment to strengthen local governance, improve public services, and foster more inclusive communities. According to Dr Bonnici, the new premises will enhance the council’s ability to serve families and residents while ensuring a stronger local presence.

Alison Zerafa Civelli highlighted that the Government remains focused on ensuring that devolution agreements are sustainable and do not impose undue burdens on councils. She noted that the planned development in Mqabba will allow residents to access a range of government services from a single location, contributing to both efficiency and community development.

Mayor Grace Marie Zerafa described the agreement as a significant milestone, explaining that the council had been working for months to secure the site. She stated that the project will enable the council to implement a holistic plan that benefits the entire community, adding that the agreement will have a lasting positive impact on residents.

The transfer agreement was formally signed by Lands Authority Chief Executive Robert Vella, Mayor Zerafa, and Executive Secretary Valarie Galea, marking the official handover of the site to the local council.
