New €5.3 million Richmond Foundation wellbeing centre to be built in Mosta

Prime Minister Robert Abela, alongside European Funds Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi and the Richmond Foundation, has presented the plans for a new Wellbeing Centre to be located on government-donated land in Mosta.

The project is backed by a €5.3 million investment from the European Regional Development Fund and aims to create a modern facility tailored specifically for mental health services, a government statement said Monday.

The centre will feature specialised therapeutic rooms, educational areas, and recreational spaces designed to offer a safe and dignified environment for patients and their families.

During the presentation, Prime Minister Abela said that the project is part of a holistic vision to place mental health services at the heart of the community. He praised the Richmond Foundation for its work in reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, noting that the foundation has increased its therapeutic sessions tenfold over the last decade.

He also highlighted the success of the Mental Health First Aid Course, which has been completed by over 11,000 people. Abela reaffirmed the government’s commitment to social priorities, mentioning that work also continues on the new mental health hospital at Mater Dei.

Minister Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi stated that the €5.3 million allocation is a clear example of European funds making a tangible difference in people’s lives by investing in human quality of life and inclusive infrastructure.

Daniela Calleja Bitar, CEO of the Richmond Foundation, described the centre as a significant step forward that will allow the foundation to offer more comprehensive and accessible community services.

The facility is intended to serve as a supportive hub for those facing mental health challenges, fostering a society that prioritizes empathy and concrete support for its citizens.
