Bugibba square regeneration project completed, Transport Minister says

Transport Minister Chris Bonett said that the regeneration project at Bugibba square has been completed, following months of disruption and delays which had sparked frustration among residents and business owners in the area.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Bonett posted photos of the square and wrote that Bugibba square is now more beautiful than ever before.

Bonett added that he had promised the project would be completed by May 2026 “and completed in May 2026 it is.”

The large-scale regeneration project, carried out by Infrastructure Malta in collaboration with the Malta Tourism Authority, had faced criticism in recent months as businesses and residents complained about prolonged disruption ahead of the summer season.

Residents and shop owners had spoken to The Malta Independent on Sunday and described worsening conditions in the locality as works dragged on beyond expectations, with concerns raised over safety, communication and the impact on business activity in one of Malta’s busiest tourist zones.

The project, estimated at around €10 million, included the rebuilding of underground infrastructure and utility networks, installation of water features, new paving, landscaped areas, lighting, shaded seating areas and wider regeneration works in surrounding streets.
