The elected candidates: New faces join veterans in Parliament
Malta has voted for its preferred candidates, with the Labour Party securing a fourth consecutive term in government.
The 65 candidates elected directly from the country’s 13 electoral districts – five from each district – have now been confirmed.
Five candidates were elected from each district under Malta’s single transferable vote system, establishing the initial composition of Parliament..
The elected candidates include a mixture of experienced parliamentarians and several newcomers who will be entering Parliament for the first time once the next legislature convenes.
However, the 65 elected candidates do not represent the final composition of Parliament.
A total of 14 candidates were elected from two districts and must now relinquish one of their seats. In 2022, 16 candidates were elected on two districts.
Their decision will trigger the casual elections, allowing unelected candidates from the respective districts to fill the vacant seats.
The candidates elected from two districts are Prime Minister Robert Abela, Chris Fearne, Jonathan Attard, Miriam Dalli, Ian Borg, Adrian Delia, Clyde Caruana, Conrad Borg Manché, Michael Falzon, Clifton Grima, Rebekah Borg, PN leader Alex Borg, Stephen Spiteri and Mark Anthony Sammut.
Nine women secured a seat in Parliament out of the 65 elected MPs, compared to 2022, where only four women were elected on first count.
The women elected were Alison Zerafa Civelli, Paula Mifsud Bonnici, Miriam Dalli, Rosianne Cutajar, Julia Farrugia, Rebekah Borg, Eve Borg Bonello, Graziella Galea and Alicia Bugeja Said.
The final size of Parliament is also expected to exceed the 65 seats filled through the first count.
Under Malta’s electoral system, additional seats may be allocated through the proportionality mechanism and the gender corrective mechanism, meaning the final composition of the House of Representatives will only be known once all electoral processes have been completed.
PN candidates Janice Abela Chetcuti and Frank Anthony Tabone will get parliamentary seats owing to the proportionality mechanism. The gender corrective mechanism will only come into play after the casual elections have concluded.
The previous legislature consisted of a record 79 MPs after additional seats were awarded through these constitutional mechanisms.
Attention will now shift to the casual elections and any additional seats that may be awarded before the final composition of Malta’s next Parliament is formally established.
