‘We did everything we could,’ Delia says after Labour victory

Nationalist Party candidate and ex-leader Adrian Delia told this newsroom that “we did everything we could” till the very end. Delia was speaking to The Malta Independent a few minutes after PL’s win was declared.

Delia – disappointed by this electoral defeat – refrained from giving his analysis into this result immediately after early indications showed that the Nationalist Party, despite losing another general election, has reduced the vote gap to the Labour Party by some 20,000 votes.

Noting that such analysis would be “loaded with emotion,” he remarked that while it is positive that the PN has managed to reduce its vote deficit to the PL (from 39,474 votes in 2022 to some 18,000 votes in 2026), especially “against the strength of a government that was able to plan ahead,” it is still not enough.

Despite stating that it is “good” that the PN has reduced its vote deficit to the PL, Delia said that whether a party loses an election by “10,000, 20,000, [or] 30,000 votes…the party that attains the most [votes] is the one that governs.”

Delia added through his personal, and competitive, point of view, he was not too fussed with the voter gap being reduced to what looks to be more than half the 2022 general election result. He noted that, in elections, “it’s either you win or you lose – there is no draw” and that “whether you lose by a lot or by little, you lose and you end up in the Opposition.”

Despite this, he told this newsroom on Sunday morning that while early indications show that the result wasn’t enough to give the PN its long-sought electoral victory, the PN must continue to see which candidates have been entrusted with parliamentary seats from the country’s 13 districts.

“All I can say is for us to continue till the end, so we can understand and implement what the people have called for,” Delia said.

On a personal note, he pledged to continue working for all voters who have entrusted him to be a parliamentary representative in their name.

The former PN leader said that “for sure, it is encouraging for all the great work that [the PN] did all together as one team.” He said that, since he first entered politics, he doesn’t recall seeing so much coordination and unity “between candidates, the leadership, [and] all party exponents as much as this time round.”

Delia believes that this sense of teamwork contributed to this result and that it is “encouraging” for the PN’s future.
