Abela urges unity after historic fourth term win for Labour

Prime Minister Robert Abela has urged all Maltese citizens to unite and move the nation forward following Labour’s historic general election victory.

Speaking to thousands of supporters at a mass meeting in Floriana on Sunday night, Abela emphasized his desire to work with everyone, regardless of how they voted.

This victory marks the first time since Maltese independence that any political party has secured a fourth consecutive mandate. The Nationalist Party conceded defeat on Sunday morning, with the final gap between the two main parties closing at 21,721 votes, which is less than half of Labour’s winning margin from 2022.

Abela, who called the snap election a year early to seek a fresh mandate amidst global instability, stated that he accepts the strong mandate with humility and pledged five years of hard work to deliver on his party’s manifesto.

 He also paid tribute to past Labour leaders, Dom Mintoff, Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici, Alfred Sant and Joseph Muscat, calling the win a collective victory for the entire country.

Voter turnout was higher than in the previous election, which Abela welcomed as a sign of strong civic engagement. He closed his address by promising to serve all citizens and repeating the core campaign message that the people’s dreams remain the government’s project.
