PN casual elections to take place on 16 June

The Electoral Commission has announced the opening of nominations for a series of casual elections to fill vacancies in the House of Representatives across five electoral districts following the ceding of seats by elected Members of Parliament.

In a statement on Monday, the Electoral Commission said that casual elections for the seats vacated by Nationalist Party MPs in district 3, 5, 7, 10, and 12 will take place on Tuesday 16 June.

The seats are being vacated by Stephen Spiteri, Mark Anthony Sammut, Conrad Borg Manche’, Adrian Delia, Rebekah Borg, Joe Giglio and Alex Borg.

The writ authorising the elections has been published in the Government Gazette, triggering the formal process to elect replacement MPs in the affected districts.

Eligible candidates who contested the mentioned electoral divisions in the General Election and who were not elected may present their nomination form daily from Tuesday 9 June till Saturday 13 June.

Casual elections are held under Malta’s electoral system when elected candidates vacate one of the seats won in multiple districts, allowing eligible unelected candidates from the same party and district to contest for the vacant parliamentary seat.

The casual elections for the seats vacated by Labour Party MPs will be taking place on Friday 12 June.
