22 immigrants caught living in Malta illegally, to be deported

22 immigrants were arrested over the course of Saturday after they were found to be living in the country illegally.

Police said in a statement that the arrests were made through inspections in Blata l-Bajda, Ħamrun, and Marsa, together with searches in private residents in Marsa, Ħamrun, Fgura, and Rabat.

Police officers were assisted by officials from the Detention Services Agency.

Those arrested are being held in a detention centre until they can be deported back to their home country or to a country they have permission to live in.

“Malta continues to honour its obligations in this sector with total respect to the country’s laws,” the police said.

The nationality of those arrested was not specified in the police’s statement.

The arrests come hot on the heels of the arrest of 19 people found to be living illegally in Malta between Wednesday and Thursday.
