Dan Snow highlights Maltese Islands’ history and cultural heritage to global audiences

The Malta Tourism Authority, in collaboration with Heritage Malta and The Phoenicia Malta, recently hosted renowned historian and broadcaster Dan Snow for a special live podcast event.

This initiative is part of VisitMalta’s ongoing strategy to promote the islands as a premier cultural and heritage destination for international audiences seeking authentic travel experiences.

Dan Snow, a globally recognized history communicator with millions of followers across his History Hit platform and social media channels, participated in an immersive programme highlighting Malta’s historical depth.

His itinerary included explorations of the historic streets of Birgu, visits to the church of St Lawrence and Fort St Angelo, and a unique Taste History Dinner at the Inquisitor’s Palace. Furthermore, Snow toured Valletta, focusing on sites significant to the Knights of the Order of St John and the Great Siege of 1565, such as Fort St Elmo and the Grand Master’s Palace.

The visit culminated in a live podcast titled The Story of Malta with Dan Snow. Joined by experts from Heritage Malta and the University of Malta, Snow guided an audience through 9,000 years of history.

The panel used significant artefacts to anchor the discussion, including prehistoric obsidian, an Islamic earthenware lantern, an Order of St John hunting pistol, the Tyger Goblet, Admiral Decres’ presentation sword, and Malta’s George Cross. These objects facilitated an engaging exploration of themes such as naval conflict, diplomacy, cultural exchange, and Malta’s enduring strategic importance as a Mediterranean crossroads.

Government officials and tourism leaders underscored the success and strategic value of the event. Minister for Tourism Jo Etienne Abela noted that showcasing Malta’s heritage to international audiences attracts quality visitors who value meaningful cultural connections. Similarly, Malta Tourism Authority CEO Carlo Micallef emphasized that partnering with influential figures like Snow allows Malta to share its extraordinary narrative with a global community of culture-conscious travellers.

Reflecting on his stay, Dan Snow praised Malta’s diverse historical offerings, ranging from ancient and renaissance periods to Napoleonic and World War II history.

Heritage Malta CEO Noel Zammit and Minister Malcolm Paul Agius Galea echoed these sentiments, stressing the importance of bringing history to life through passionate discourse and international collaboration. The event successfully combined academic insight with contemporary media, reinforcing Malta’s profile as a significant historical destination while encouraging the preservation and interpretation of its rich heritage for future generations.
