Samuel Lucas appointed Head of Comms at OPM, Edward Montebello takes over as One chairman
Samuel Lucas has been appointed Head of Communications at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), the government announced on Monday.
He replaces Edward Montebello, who has been appointed One chairman and head of communications at the Labour Party.
Lucas will take up the role on 7 September, the government said.
Lucas holds honours degrees in Law and English and spent seven years working in journalism, during which he also served as a deputy head of news.
For the past two years, he has worked within the communications office at the OPM.
In its statement announcing the appointment, the OPM thanked Montebello for the work he carried out while serving as Head of Communications over the past years.
In a separate statement, the Labour Party said Edward Montebello has been entrusted with the leadership of the Labour Party’s media operations with effect from Monday 21 September. He will be appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors of ONE and Head of Communications of the Labour Party.
These appointments will further strengthen the Party’s media leadership, ensuring that the Labour Party’s message continues to reach the public in a clear, effective and impactful manner, the party said.
Montebello brings almost 20 years of experience in broadcasting and the media sector. He spent 13 years in ONE’s newsroom, serving as Deputy Head, Head of News and Editor of the station. For the past four years, he has served as Head of Government Communications within the Office of the Prime Minister.
Montebello holds a degree in History and Education and previously worked as a teacher. Throughout his broadcasting career, he has also produced and presented several television programmes and documentaries.
Commenting on his appointment, Montebello said he looks forward to leading an important phase of work to ensure that the Labour Party’s message continues to be communicated in a fresh, incisive and compelling way. He expressed his gratitude for the confidence placed in him and said he is taking on his new responsibilities with full commitment.
He added that, together with the Party’s structures and the employees of ONE, many of whom are colleagues with whom he has worked throughout his career, he is determined to build on the strong foundations laid by those who came before him and continue strengthening them, ensuring success in a sector that continues to evolve rapidly.
The Labour Party extended its gratitude to Silvio Scerri and Norma Saliba for their service as Chairman of ONE and Head of Communications of the Labour Party, respectively.
Saliba is expected to take up a position at Transport Malta.
