PN says taxpayers are bearing the cost of Labour’s private property cases
The Nationalist Party said that taxpayers are bearing the cost of cases involving Labour’s use of private properties, after the party was ordered to vacate its Republic Street premises in Valletta within one month.
In a statement, the PN said the development followed a Constitutional Court judgment last February concerning the Labour Party’s occupation of the privately owned property.
The PN said that, when combined with other compensation arising from cases concerning private property, the state has been ordered to pay more than €1.6 million in recent months in cases involving the Labour Party’s use or occupation of private property.
It said that these payments ultimately fall on taxpayers.
In the Valletta case, the court had found that the owners’ fundamental rights had been breached after the property remained under Labour’s control for decades.
The PN said the owners subsequently brought the matter before the Rent Regulation Board, arguing that they continued to suffer damage because the property had not been vacated following the Constitutional Court’s ruling.
The PN said that a magistrate has now ordered the Labour Party to vacate the premises within one month.
The party also referred to compensation awarded in the earlier constitutional proceedings. It said the state had been ordered to pay €254,000 to the owners of the Valletta property.
The PN also recalled Labour’s response to the February Constitutional Court judgment, when the party said it would respect the court’s decision, “as it always does”.
The latest order concerns the continued occupation of the Valletta premises and follows the owners’ decision to seek further judicial intervention, the PN said.
