Several sectors lacking serious planning and well-planned investment, Alex Borg says
During a meeting with the Chamber of SMEs on Thursday, Opposition leader Alex Borg said that Malta has several sectors that require serious planning and well-planned investment, such as the mass transport and energy sectors.
Alex Borg and the Nationalist Party met with a delegation from the Chamber of SMEs for a pre-Budget meeting in which Borg stressed the need for substantial investment in the country’s infrastructure. He said that Malta cannot move forward unless it invests in its infrastructure.
The PN mentioned in its press release on this meeting that “while the Government’s recurrent expenditure continues to rise, spending on capital projects is falling. Instead of investing more in the country’s infrastructure to support population growth, we are investing less.”
Borg expressed concern that a discrepancy has recently emerged in the public limelight in the statements of Chris Bonett, the Minister for Sustainable Mobility, and Finance Minister Clyde Caruana on the national light-rail (metro) project. Borg said that, despite the Labour Party’s pre-election pledge to invest in mass transport, Minister Caruana has cast “serious doubt” on whether this major project can even be delivered.
The Opposition leader also noted that Malta must be more ambitious in its investment in renewable energy.
Discussing the economy, Borg stressed the need for economic growth to translate into real improvements for businesses and the public alike.
The PN observed how it and the Chamber of SMEs align when it comes to opinions on national productivity. The Chamber said that the points raised by the PN were reflected in several of its own proposals, adding that “it would be a mistake to fail to recognise that the country’s problems must be addressed holistically and collectively.”
Borg also mentioned that the Opposition must continue its work related to governance. Among this is pushing for serious debate in Parliament to result in the implementation of necessary reforms, so that people and businesses “regain” their confidence in national institutions, since this also affects businesses across the Maltese islands.
Accompanying Borg from the Nationalist Party were its Shadow Minister for Finance, Adrian Delia, as well as its Shadow Minister for the Economy, Technology and Capital Projects, Darren Carabott.
