Abela rejects PN claims of copying proposals, says election hinges on credibility and energy record

Prime Minister Robert Abela has dismissed claims by the Nationalist Party that the government has adopted several of its proposals, instead accusing the Opposition of lacking credibility and consistency.

Speaking during a political event, Abela argued that the PN’s repeated assertions that Labour has copied its ideas only serve to deepen what he described as the party’s “credibility problem.” He said the PN frequently announces proposals and later claims ownership of policies implemented by the government.

Abela framed the upcoming 30 May election as a “choice of credibility,” questioning which party voters trust to deliver on its promises. He pointed to the government’s track record, particularly in the energy sector, as evidence of Labour’s reliability in times of crisis.

Highlighting recent global challenges – including the COVID-19 pandemic, the war between Ukraine and Russia, and ongoing logistical and energy pressures – Abela said Malta had managed to shield consumers from rising fuel and energy costs. He noted that petrol and diesel prices had remained stable, with a reduction of seven cents per litre during the pandemic, and emphasised that electricity tariffs had not increased.

Abela also highlighted Malta’s economic performance, stating that the country had met its financial targets agreed with the European Commission ahead of schedule and had tripled its economic output over the past twelve years.

In contrast, Abela criticised the PN’s past record in government, referring to the 2008 financial crisis. He said that during that period, which he described as a “small crisis”, energy prices rose sharply and frequently, creating instability for consumers.

 According to Abela, this reflects the Opposition’s approach to energy policy.
