Alex Agius Saliba and Daniel Attard nominated for MEP Awards 2026

Two Maltese Members of the European Parliament (MEP), Alex Agius Saliba and Daniel Attard, have been nominated for this year’s MEP Awards.

Agius Saliba was nominated for the Digital Champion and Innovation Award, which is designed to honour “the visionary shaping Europe’s digital transformation and innovation leadership,” while Attard is one of three nominees for the Sustainable Tourism Award, which exists to reward “the MEP promoting responsible, inclusive, and future-ready tourism across Europe.”

This latest nomination marks the sixth consecutive year that PL MEP Agius Saliba has been nominated as one of the best MEPs in the European Parliament, from its 720 members in total.

The Labour Party said that he was nominated for this year’s recognition “primarily due to his vast experience covering the subject of digital sovereignty and public digital infrastructure.”

Agius Saliba said he is proud to be nominated for a sixth consecutive year as one of the best MEPs around.

“This trust continues to fill me with more courage to continue to strive and represent Gozitans and Maltese in the best possible way in the European Parliament,” he said.

Fellow Maltese MEP Daniel Attard was nominated for his work this past year as the European Parliament’s lead negotiator on the future of tourism in Europe. The Labour Party said that the report Attard spearheaded on this subject received strong backing within the European Parliament and is set to serve as the foundation of the European Union’s first Sustainable Tourism Strategy.

Attard said he is honoured to have been selected as a finalist for these prestigious MEP Awards.

“This recognition reflects not only my own work, but also the importance Malta places on the tourism sector and the valuable contribution our country can make to shaping the European debate on the future of tourism,” he said.

Attard’s European tourism policy seeks to promote sustainable tourism by enshrining the protection of cultural identity, stronger connectivity for islands and peripheral regions, investment in people and skills, environmental sustainability, while striking a balance between tourism growth and local communities’ quality of life.

In last year’s edition of the MEP Awards, PL MEP Thomas Bajada was recognised as the joint winner of the Best Newcomer Award. Attard was also shortlisted as one of the EP’s best newcomers last year.

These awards serve as an opportunity to recognise some of the European Parliament’s best public representatives. The 2026 MEP Awards feature 12 categories.
