People who are successful in the entertainment industry come from all walks of life. Those that are successful share common practices and those that fail do as well. People who fail are good at one thing– making excuses; they will blame everything from self esteem to bad luck, and even mommy and daddy. Here are the top five reasons people fail:
1) People fail in the entertainment industry, first and foremost, because failure is considered the norm and success is thought of as the exception—many believe the successful are ‘others’ that were just plain lucky. From the media, and even friends and family, the overwhelming message is that success is scarce, limited to the privileged, the lucky, and always someone else. If you talk to any of the people who have made it, they will tell you they were motivated enough to take the personal initiative to work hard to get where they are. There was a time when people came to this country with the belief that if they worked hard enough, they would succeed. Unfortunately that mindset no longer exists in our culture today.
2) Many young actors and models underestimate the number of obstacles they will encounter and the time, energy, and money it will take to overcome these situations– they then become broke and disillusioned. Living in this age of ‘instant everything’ it is becoming ever more prevalent that people underestimate the amount of effort necessary to accomplish any worthy goal. The truth is you will not be instantly discovered– no one is going to pick you up and start paying for everything. Success in the real world requires an astonishing amount of work and consistent effort.
3) Often aspiring entertainers lack the right degree of motivation to follow through and make their goals a reality. You must learn the skill of creating, managing and regenerating motivation despite all the obstacles and failure you will encounter. Take time daily to reflect on your life’s goals. This exercise will refocus your attention on the future, and thus offset these minor, initial failures, refueling your interest in performing, acting, or modeling.
4) A common problem for aspiring actors is that they are surrounded by people who are failing to achieve the same goals. You can be experiencing failure unnecessarily justbecause the people around you who influence you don’t know how to succeed. Taking advice from these people is like asking a homeless man for directions home. Any negativity they are feeling, any lack of motivation has an effect like secondhand smoke causing cancer in your career. Surrounding yourself with friends, relatives, and associates that are failing to achieve their goals will have direct negative repercussions on your chances at success.
5) People fail when they don’t have confidence that they can make it in the entertainment industry. Self worth is a key ingredient for success as a performer, actor, or model. Becoming confident requires consistent training and daily coaching that increases a person’s belief in their abilities. The most successful people train, practice, and get feedback as a daily ritual.
Get the five items above handled, and make #5 a ritual and I assure you will discover that a successful entertainment career is available to anyone who is willing to work for it!
