Archbishop Scicluna urges faithful to learn compassion from Mary on Our Lady of Sorrows feast

Archbishop Charles Scicluna on Friday led Mass on the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows at the Church of St Mary of Jesus (Ta’ Ġieżu) in Valletta, where he called on the faithful to learn humility, obedience and service from the Virgin Mary.

In his homily, Archbishop Scicluna reflected on the moment in St John’s Gospel when Jesus, from the cross, entrusts his mother to the beloved disciple, telling him: “Here is your mother” (John 19:27). He said that beyond asking the disciple to care for Mary, Jesus was also inviting him into “Mary’s school” to learn from her example.

The Archbishop said that, in the same way, the faithful are encouraged on this day to follow Mary’s example, learning not to run away from suffering but to transform it into love. He prayed that through her intercession, people may recognise those in need and have the courage to offer help that truly does good.

Archbishop Scicluna also prayed for parents mourning loved ones lost in wars around the world, as well as those grieving children who died from drug overdoses or other tragic circumstances. Referring to Mary’s tears at the foot of the cross, he said they should also remember the tears of many mothers and fathers, and prayed that their sorrow may bear the fruits of peace, solidarity and reconciliation.
