Byron Camilleri makes first official school visit to Rabat Primary

Education and Sport Minister Byron Camilleri has made his first official engagement in the education sector with a visit to Anton Agius Primary School in Rabat. 

Opened three years ago following a substantial investment in modern educational infrastructure, the school has become a showcase for the transformation taking place within the sector. Previously operating from two separate buildings, the school now accommodates 422 students across 13 kindergarten classes and 18 primary classes. Its facilities include dedicated spaces for art and music, a gymnasium, a multi-sensory room and a range of digital learning resources.

Camilleri met with Head of School Dorita Maniscalco, members of the management team, educators, students and support staff to discuss the school’s priorities and ongoing efforts to provide inclusive, high-quality education. The school currently supports 48 students with diverse educational needs through the work of 40 Learning Support Educators and is also working towards achieving Dyslexia Friendly School status.

Camilleri was briefed on a number of achievements recorded by the school during the current academic year. These include Gold Awards in Mathematics and the Let’s Talk Farming programme, Gold and Platinum Awards in the Book Champion Programme, the Eco-School Green Flag and the Digital Citizenship Award.

Several ongoing initiatives were also highlighted, including the development of a Makerspace through Esplora funding, the Open Horizon project for Early Years students, and the Green Project, which features an outdoor classroom, experimentation station and kitchen garden. The school is also actively participating in eTwinning and Erasmus+ programmes, providing students with additional opportunities for learning and international collaboration.

Addressing those present, Camilleri said the school demonstrates how investment in facilities, inclusion and innovation can create better opportunities for students.

“Education is undergoing continuous transformation that places students at the centre of every decision,” he said. “It is encouraging to see schools taking a leading role in this transformation through innovation, inclusion and the effective use of technology. The government will continue investing to ensure that every student has the opportunity to develop their potential and be prepared for future challenges and opportunities.”

Maniscalco said the school remains committed to delivering modern, inclusive and high-quality education while continuing to invest in educators’ professional development, student wellbeing and innovative initiatives.

She noted that over the past three years the school has been strengthened through a number of investments and projects, including a new play structure for early years students, a dedicated STEM learning space, and initiatives focused on outdoor learning, sustainability and international collaboration through Erasmus+.

“Our school is a second home for our students,” Maniscalco said. “We work every day to create an environment where every student feels safe, supported and motivated to reach their full potential. This visit encourages us to build on our achievements and continue providing the best possible educational experience for all our students.”
