Claire Stafrace Zammit, Brigitte Sultana selected to be appointed as Judges
Magistrates Claire Stafrace Zammit and Brigitte Sultana have been selected to be appointed Judges, as the complement at the top echelons of Malta’s judiciary grows.
In a statement, the Office of the President noted that a public call for two new Judges was opened by the Justice Ministry on 30 January this year, with applications open until 20 February.
There were 21 expressions of interests from individuals eligible for the post which were evaluated by the Judicial Appointments Committee, which then submitted a report outlining the names of three candidates who it felt were most suitable for the post.
The Committee highlighted Magistrates Elaine Rizzo, Claire Stafrace Zammit, and Brigitte Sultana as most suitable in the first instance. Stafrace Zammit was selected out of those three candidates by the President.
For the second post, the Committee recommended Magistrates Brigitte Sultana, Elaine Rizzo, and Leonard Caruana as the most ideal candidates. The President subsequently selected Sultana for the role.
Claire Stafrace Zammit was appointed as a Magistrate in September 2009 and has been a practicing lawyer since 1999. Brigitte Sultana meanwhile was appointed as a Magistrate in April 2019 and has been serving in the Gozo Courts in recent years. She has been a practicing lawyers since 1995.
“It is hereby declared that the appointment of two Judges in accordance with the public call issued by the Minister for Justice and Construction Sector Reform on the 30th of January 2026 has been fulfilled and exhausted,” the Office of the President said.
The President congratulated the newly appointed Judges and thanks the members of the Judicial Appointments Committee for the meticulous work they have carried out.
