Dangerous crane dismantled in St Paul’s Bay

Authorities have dismantled an abandoned tower crane that posed a risk to residents and the public, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) and the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) said in a joint statement.

The crane was located at a construction site in Triq Jean de La Cassier, St Paul’s Bay.

The crane was removed after residents filed multiple complaints about it. Investigations by the BCA and the OHSA concluded that the crane was inactive and abandoned, and authorities determined it posed a danger to nearby residents and third parties. After attempting to contact the owners for several days and receiving no response, the authorities ordered its removal.

OHSA CEO Josianne Cutajar said that the authority will remain proactive in removing risks posed by machinery or construction sites, especially where the safety of workers and the public is threatened.

BCA CEO Roderick Bonnici also commented, saying that the case shows the authority is taking a more proactive approach to preventing accidents.

The crane was dismantled with the assistance of the Civil Protection Department (CPD). The operation was carried out under BCA supervision, with OHSA overseeing worker safety during the removal.
