€1.5 million to go towards therapeutic activities for persons with disabilities

The Ministry for Inclusion and Volunteering signed a €1.5 million agreement over three years with Embrace Diversity Organisation through Aġenzija Sapport, the aforementioned ministry said in a statement.

The investment represents a 131% increase compared to the previous agreement. The funding will strengthen day services for persons with disabilities. Services will be offered free of charge to such persons, with a focus on children and young people with complex disabilities and possible medical needs.

The programmes will serve up to 60 persons with disabilities per week, aged 3 to 22 years. Activities will be offered in the morning, afternoon, and on Saturdays to increase flexibility for participants and families. Programmes will be run by trained staff and designed by qualified therapists. Activities will focus on gross and fine motor skills, sensory development, social inclusion and communication, teamwork, and independent living skills.

Participants will be referred by professionals from Aġenzija Sapport, followed by an eligibility assessment. Each participant will have a personalised support plan, regularly reviewed by a multidisciplinary team. Aġenzija Sapport will monitor the services to ensure they comply with the agreement. The organisation will also be responsible for maintaining and developing accessible and safe facilities.

Services will comply with relevant laws and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The announcement was made during a visit by Inclusion Minister Julia Farrugia and Aġenzija Sapport CEO Oliver Scicluna to one of the ongoing sessions.

“This agreement is clear proof of the commitment of the government that keeps investing in services that made a real difference in the lives of persons with disabilities and their families,” Farrugia said.
