€1 million awarded to voluntary organisations for 87 new community projects
A total of €1 million in funding has been awarded to voluntary organisations to support 87 new community projects, the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector (MCVS) has announced.
The grants, issued through the Voluntary Organisations Project Scheme (VOPS) and the Small Initiatives Scheme (SIS), follow a competitive process open to organisations that are registered and compliant with the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations. Since the schemes were established, more than 930 projects have been implemented with total funding amounting to €9.7 million.
The funding was formally presented by the Minister for Inclusion and Volunteering, Julia Farrugia, during an event attended by MCVS Chairperson Gertude Buttigieg and Chief Executive Officer Mauro Pace Parascandalo.
Farrugia said the investment demonstrates the government’s commitment to placing communities at the centre of public policy. She described volunteering as “a fundamental pillar of a fair and inclusive society”, adding that the funding ensures public resources reach organisations that directly support people’s wellbeing.
She noted that the funds would benefit families, young people, older persons and vulnerable groups, while helping voluntary organisations innovate and respond to emerging social challenges. Farrugia also pointed to the cumulative impact of the schemes, saying the implementation of over 930 projects reflects a continued political commitment to strengthening the sector.
Pace Parascandalo said it was encouraging to see new initiatives being developed each year across different communities, all aimed at delivering social good in various areas of voluntary work.
Also present at the presentation were the Permanent Secretary within the Ministry for Inclusion and Volunteering, Anthony Gatt, and the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations, Jesmond Saliba.
