€2 million restoration scheme opens for Gozo

The government has opened the “Irrestawra Darek u l-Villaġġ” scheme for the Gozo region, the Gozo Ministry said in a statement.

With a total allocation of €2 million, the aim is the restoration, conservation, and maintenance of properties in Urban Conservation Areas (UCAs).

The scheme forms part of wider efforts to preserve Gozo’s architectural heritage, particularly within UCAs, where traditional building features are protected by planning policies. Part of the funding includes €500,000 that was not utilised in a separate scheme, which has now been redirected to Gozo, bringing the total allocation to €2 million.

Eligible applicants are private homeowners, NGOs, and businesses who are within UCAs across Gozo. A grant of up to €15,000 is available for general UCA properties, up to €100,000 for Grade 1 scheduled buildings, and up to €50,000 for Grade 2 scheduled buildings.

Planning Authority CEO Johann Buttigieg noted that similar schemes attracted hundreds of applications in other regions, reflecting growing appreciation for the preservation of built heritage. Strong demand for this scheme was already seen nationally, with previous regions (West and South Malta) being fully subscribed within days. This shows high public demand for restoration funding, the government said.

Applications opened on 25 March and close on 1 April. These can be submitted online or in person via the Planning Authority. Authorities said applications will be evaluated in the order they are received to ensure a fair and transparent process.

“This investment demonstrates the Government’s commitment to protecting and preserving the unique character of Gozitan villages and towns,” Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri said.

Camilleri said the initiative would also contribute to sustainable development and strengthen Gozo’s cultural identity by encouraging property owners to restore rather than alter traditional buildings.

He added that the scheme also supports preparations linked to Gozo’s bid for Victoria to become the European Capital of Culture in 2031.
