Financial incentives announced for cleaner and more sustainable transport

The Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, together with Transport Malta, announced the renewal of a number of schemes and financial grants aimed at further strengthening the shift towards cleaner, more sustainable, and environmentally friendly transport systems.

In total, details were announced of seven schemes which, among others, promote the purchase and use of electric vehicles, electric and low-emission petrol motorcycles, pedelecs (electric-assisted bicycles), as well as vehicles that are more accessible for persons with disabilities or reduced mobility.

Over the past four years, total investment in these grants reached €90 million between 2022 and 2025, with more than 15,000 grants approved. This year’s package of measures represents a substantial investment of €33 million, which continues to encourage individuals, families, and businesses to choose more modern mobility solutions.

The Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works, Chris Bonett, stated that the positive public response to these financial grants reinforces the Government’s commitment to continue with a policy based on incentives rather than punishment. He explained that the investment over the last four years, together with this year’s allocation, means that “our country still offers among the highest grants in Europe and has one of the highest rates of electric vehicles in Europe, which shows that the Government, through its policies, is moving in the right direction,” the Minister added.

For his part, the Chief Executive Officer of Transport Malta, Kurt Farrugia, said that anyone who purchased their vehicle from 1 January 2026 onwards may apply for these grants. He explained that applications are now open and can be accessed through Transport Malta’s website.
