First oral health training programme for elderly care homes launched

The Older Persons Standards Authority (OPSA) has launched a new oral health training programme for carers in residential homes across Malta and Gozo, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Active Ageing said.

The programme is described as the first of its kind in the sector. The initiative aims to improve carers’ knowledge and practical skills in oral health care and to address the fact that elderly residents are at higher risk of dental conditions.

“This initiative clearly reflects the Authority’s vision and ongoing commitment,” OPSA CEO George Fenech said.

The programme includes group training sessions and individual practical training. It also includes on-site screening of residents, allowing carers to apply skills in real scenarios. Carers will be given practical tools and guidelines, as well as training to identify, document, and report oral health issues.

The initiative is designed to enable timely referrals to dental professionals and improve health outcomes and quality of life for elderly residents, the Parliamentary Secretariat said.  The programme forms part of a broader push toward preventive care and higher standards in elderly care services.

“Thanks to this initiative we will continue to invest in a practical and tangible way in the well-being of the elderly holistically, including oral health,” Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Malcolm Paul Agius Galea said.
