Food Safety and Security Authority taking precautions after fireworks explosion

The Food Safety and Security Authority has said that it is taking precautionary measures in response to the explosion of a fireworks factory in Maghtab early on Monday morning.

The explosion, which rocked surrounding localities and caused the death of livestock and animals close by, occurred early on Monday morning at the Ta’ Lourdes fireworks factory.

Two men who were working in fields nearby were slightly injured by debris and were taken to hospital to be also treated for shock. 

In a statement on Tuesday, the Food Safety and Security Authority (FSSA) said that in accordance with Chapter 649 of the law which governs it, and in line with the authority’s role to ensure transparency and public awareness on matters relating to food safety and security, “the Authority wishes to inform the public that it has initiated immediate precautionary measures following the firework explosion that occurred in the early hours of yesterday morning.”

 “The Food Safety and Security Authority immediately activated its response mechanisms and commenced assessments to determine any potential impact that debris, combustion residues or other contaminants may have on food, feed and agricultural produce within the affected areas,” the authority said. 

The FSSA added that inspections, sampling and risk assessments are underway and will continue as necessary. 

“The Authority is working closely with relevant entities, as well as food and feed producers, farmers and food business operators, to ensure that any potential risks are identified and addressed promptly. These efforts are intended to protect public health while providing producers with the necessary guidance and support,” it said.

 The authority said that food and feed safety remains its highest priority. “Through ongoing monitoring and science-based risk assessment, the Authority is taking all necessary precautions to ensure that food placed on the market and reaching Maltese households remains safe for consumption,” the authority added.

The FSSA said that further updates will be provided as necessary.
