Government launches Marsaxlokk food truck to promote sustainable local fish

The government has launched a food truck in Marsaxlokk to promote local and lesser-known fish species, the Parliamentary Secretariat for Fishing said in a statement.

The initiative is tied to the national campaign “Skopri l-Varjetà, Kul Ħut Sostenibbli” and aims to encourage sustainable consumption and support local fishermen. The official launch was officiated by the Parliamentary Secretary for Fishing Alicia Bugeja Said, and was run in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture.

The food truck will be in Marsaxlokk every Sunday. The public can taste fresh, locally caught fish, discover less popular species, and learn about nutritional and environmental benefits. The food truck will also offer an information and education space where visitors can speak with experts in the sector.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to increase awareness of fish diversity in Maltese waters and to promote sustainable eating habits. It is funded through the EU’s European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund programme.

“When we choose to eat local fish, we are directly supporting our fishermen,” said Bugeja Said.

Director for Services Dennis Sciberras explained that the food truck will serve as an effective educational tool, especially for children and families, promoting healthier and more varied consumption.
