‘I am not focused on putting blame on others, I am focused on what lies ahead’ – Adrian Delia

Opposition Leader Adrian Delia said that he is not concerned about pointing fingers towards who is to blame for the challenges the party is facing at the moment as he is focused on what lies ahead for the party.

He was speaking in an interview with the Nationalist Party’s media in which he was questioned about recent events which caused a rift among the PN Parliamentary group, Executive Committee and even party members.

“Some people are trying to paint a picture of the PN being at war, however, there are discussions and debates going on because this party believes in a democracy and in transparency,” Delia said.

He said that the PN is not the only party that faces such difficulties as the PL and the government itself experience this as well, but rather than being public about it, they prefer to make underhand agreements and replace one person with another without say.

“We want to show that we will be opening discussions about all decisions including the future of the leader of the party. How can we not do so when we are trying to get the public involved once again?” he questioned.

Delia believes that these challenging times are what will make the party grow stronger and urged everyone to take a stand by joining these discussions rather than lie in wait “as this is how democracy works.”

Last Thursday, a compromise was reached among the General Council to decide whether the PN’s tesserati (paid members) in a National Convention elect a leader of the party, or vote to confirm current leader Adrian Delia.

Asked what the next step will be after the leadership issue is tackled, Delia said that whatever happens the PN has to unite behind its leader and stand strong for the next election.

“We are talking about an election that is, maximum, only one year and a half away. So the party has to focus on starting an electoral campaign, decipher who the new faces of the party will be and who wants to be at the forefront offering our services. There is a mentality of entitlement but we have to introduce one of hard work and investment in order to give back to the community,” he explained.

Asked if he feels like giving up sometimes seeing that he has lost two votes of confidence already, Delia said that he is convinced in his ideas and that they will enhance the party.

“This is why we can never lose; we are fighting for the thing that we believe in the most not just for a win,” he said, adding that he is not concerned about pointing fingers on who is to blame for the challenges the party is facing at the moment but that he is focused on what lies ahead for the party.

‘The state has failed’ – Delia on Melvin Theuma

Delia was also asked about who he thinks is to blame for the condition that middleman Melvin Theuma is in at the moment after he allegedly stabbed himself multiple times because his evidence in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia was being doubted (according to what he reportedly said in a letter).

“Blame is a heavy word but if you look at the series of events that got us here we can see that we are not leaving in a normal country,” Delia said. 

“It is not acceptable for the state to let this happen to such an important witness. The state has failed, in general not this case alone. It not only failed to strengthen our institutions but did not want to in the first place.”
