Italian singer Annalisa Minetti urges inclusive mindset shift during social justice week in Malta
Italian singer, Paralympic athlete and social justice activist Annalisa Minetti delivered a strong message on inclusion, perseverance and equal rights during a press conference held as part of Social Justice Week, emphasising that real change begins with a shift in mentality towards disability and social vulnerability.
Speaking as the week’s special guest, Minetti reflected on her own life journey, noting that although she lost much of her sight due to a genetic condition, she never allowed this to define her limits. She explained that her experiences in music, sport and public life taught her that people with disabilities must first believe in their own potential before society can fully recognise it. For Minetti, inclusion is not simply about providing assistance, but about creating an environment where everyone is encouraged to pursue ambitions without fear.
She stressed that people who live with disabilities often internalise doubt and hesitation because of societal attitudes. Overcoming these internal barriers, she said, is a crucial step towards true empowerment. “We must stop seeing disability as something that prevents us from dreaming,” she told those present, adding that progress comes when individuals challenge themselves and when institutions support that courage with practical policies.
Minetti also spoke about the wider meaning of social justice, describing it as a commitment to ensure that no one is excluded from opportunities, healthcare, education or participation in community life. She praised initiatives that place vulnerable individuals at the centre of public debate, arguing that visibility is essential if injustices are to be addressed. According to Minetti, when stories of struggle are shared openly, they become catalysts for awareness and reform.
During a separate meeting with non-governmental organisations, Minetti listened to accounts of poverty, discrimination, unequal access to education and the growing social impact of economic hardship in Malta. She remarked that such challenges are not unique to any single country, but require collective solutions rooted in solidarity. She encouraged organisations to continue collaborating, exchanging experiences and applying positive pressure on policymakers to move beyond rhetoric and towards concrete action.
Minetti thanked NGO representatives for their dedication, describing their work as the backbone of social justice. She urged them to keep building bridges between communities, institutions and decision-makers, noting that sustainable change depends on long-term cooperation rather than isolated efforts.
Throughout her interventions, Minetti returned repeatedly to the idea that inclusion is as much a cultural issue as it is a legislative one. Laws and policies, she said, are essential, but they must be accompanied by education that promotes respect, empathy and understanding from an early age. Only then can societies truly become more just and humane.
While other speakers at the press conference addressed legislative proposals and healthcare funding, Minetti’s message centred firmly on human potential. Her presence served as a reminder that personal resilience, when combined with supportive social structures, can transform lives.
Concluding her remarks, Minetti called on everyone-politicians, organisations and citizens alike-to embrace social justice not as a once-a-year theme, but as a daily responsibility. Real progress, she said, begins when each person recognises the dignity and worth of others and acts accordingly.
