Labour Party approves 26 candidates for general election

The national executive of the Labour Party has approved a group of 26 candidates to contest the next general election on its behalf, the party said on Tuesday.

This followed a rigorous process by the Candidate Commission led by Notary Charles Mangion, which analysed the applications of prospective candidates in the past weeks, the party said.

This second group consists of 26 candidates, which includes 13 new candidates.

The new candidates are:

Fleur Abela – district 1

Ramona Attard – districts 6 and 8

Yana Borg Debono Grech – districts 1 and 8

Jesmond Bonello – districts 2 and 8

Georvin Bugeja – district 2

Joseph Bugeja – districts 1 and 8

Samantha Pace Gasan – district 7

John Grech – districts 1 and 8

Remenda Grech – district 5

Olaf McKay – district 1

Francesca Zarb – districts 1 and 11

Roderick Zerafa – districts 2 and 5

Carlos Zarb – district 12

The remaining approved candidates of the second group are:

Ray Abela – districts 1 and 3

Malcolm Paul Agius Galea – districts 6 and 7

Alicia Bugeja Said – districts 3 and 12

Rebecca Buttigieg – districts 9 and 10

Naomi Cachia – districts 7 and 12

Byron Camilleri – districts 2 and 4

Katya De Giovanni – districts 4 and 10

Julia Farrugia – districts 5 and 7

Cressida Galea – districts 1 and 8

Alex Muscat – districts 8 and 11

Omar Farrugia – districts 5 and 6

Davina Sammut Hili – district 1

Deborah Schembri – districts 10 and 12

The Candidate Commission will continue this process in the coming days, the party said.

The Labour Party had already approved 17 candidates, including five new ones, at the end of March.

Absent from the list of approved candidates is former Minister Roderick Galdes, who has now reportedly filed a complaint to the upper echelons of the party, after the PL’s Executive turned his candidacy down.
