Marsaskala regeneration works progressing at Fajtata Garden in St Thomas Bay

Regeneration works at Fajtata Garden in the St Thomas Bay area of Marsaskala are progressing steadily, with the site expected to reopen to the public by next summer.

Minister for Transport, Infrastructure and Public Works Chris Bonett visited the garden this week to review the ongoing works being carried out by Infrastructure Malta as part of a wider regeneration plan for the locality. The plan includes several interventions across Marsaskala aimed at improving and modernising infrastructure and public spaces.

At Fajtata Garden, the project involves extensive upgrading works designed to enhance the area while respecting its natural surroundings. The works include the installation of new railings, the laying of new paving that better complements the natural environment, and improvements to public facilities, including upgraded toilets. A new outdoor gym is also being installed.

Landscaping works are also underway to improve the appearance and usability of the garden. In addition, the garden’s retaining wall has been completely rebuilt in order to strengthen the structure and provide better protection from natural elements.

The project also includes the creation of new and safer access routes to the popular bay. Among these is a new ramp that will improve accessibility to the area.

During his visit, Minister Bonett said that the works are progressing according to plan and that the aim is to return the garden and public space to the community by next summer.

He noted that the regeneration project forms part of a broader series of infrastructure interventions currently underway in Marsaskala. These include coastal protection works in the Munxar area, repair and embellishment works in the St Thomas Bay zone, as well as improvements to the Marsaskala promenade.

“Our priority remains that of offering better and more attractive open spaces for families to enjoy during their free time, while ensuring that the natural environment of the area is respected and protected,” Bonett said.

Infrastructure Malta Chief Operating Officer architect Janice Borg said that the main construction works at the garden have now been completed.

She explained that work is currently focused on the installation of new paving using porfido stone, a durable natural material commonly used in outdoor public spaces. In the coming weeks, additional works will include the installation of new railings and further landscaping aimed at improving the overall appearance of the garden.

The regeneration of Fajtata Garden forms part of a wider effort to upgrade public recreational spaces in Marsaskala and improve access to coastal areas for residents and visitors.
