New €800,000 digital platform to bring all local council services together online

A new digital platform bringing together all services offered by local councils across Malta and Gozo is set to be developed following the publication of a call for the project, Parliamentary Secretary for Local Government Alison Zerafa Civelli has announced.

The project is expected to involve an investment of around €800,000 and is intended to strengthen the way local councils operate, while placing citizens at the centre of their work.

According to Zerafa Civelli, the initiative is aligned with Malta Vision 2050, specifically macro measure 49, which calls for all services that can be delivered digitally to be made available online. She said digital transformation is also one of the five key tools for the implementation of the vision.

Once completed, the platform will allow the public to access all services offered by local councils around Malta and Gozo online, while also improving communication with residents and simplifying councils’ administrative processes.

The parliamentary secretary said the information gathered through the system will provide a more efficient channel of communication between residents and councils. Over time, she said, it will create a more detailed record of people’s needs and preferences, while giving councils a better understanding of the challenges residents face.

She explained that the platform will bring together every possible service, along with locality-specific information, and will be accessible both via computer and mobile. As part of the next phase, all local council services across Malta and Gozo will be consolidated in digital form, including through a dedicated mobile app.

Zerafa Civelli added that the system will also include services that are currently only available manually, as well as new services that the public will be able to access for the first time. Among these, she said, will be a chatbot facility.

She stressed that although services will be available online, they will still remain accessible through local council offices. However, the platform is expected to reduce inconvenience for those who choose to use the services digitally.

Local Government Division Director General Emil Vassallo said the division will be financing the project as part of its support to local councils. He said the aim is to create a common platform for all local councils, through which citizens will be able to access every service in the same way regardless of where they live.
