No reports of serious injuries following storm, Health Minister confirms

There have been no reports of serious injuries requiring hospitalisation following the storm, Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela has confirmed.

Speaking after the severe weather battered the country, Abela said in Parliament that while the storm had an impact on infrastructure and transport, particularly ferry services, there was no indication that anyone had been seriously harmed.

The minister explained that health authorities remained on alert due to the disruption of ferry crossings between Malta and Gozo, which raised concerns about continuity of healthcare services. However, he said he was assured by the chief executive officer of Gozo General Hospital that emergency services continued to operate without interruption.

Abela also referred to precautionary measures taken for Gozitan patients scheduled for major operations at Mater Dei Hospital. With ferry services suspended, alternative arrangements were discussed to ensure patients would not miss their procedures.

He said that helicopter transport could be used if necessary, should weather conditions allow and ferry services fail to resume in time. The minister stressed that there was still time for conditions to improve and that transfers would only take place if required.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely as weather conditions stabilise, with healthcare services remaining fully operational across both islands, he said.
