Official programme for Feast of St Gregory launched

The government has launched the official programme for the traditional Feast of St Gregory, the Culture Ministry said in a statement. 

The cultural evening will feature music, għana, and storytelling. It will also feature historical themes such as the 1614 Ottoman attack on Żejtun. 

Moreover, the traditional XirCammini walk will take place, this year from Bir Miftuħ to Żejtun. There will also be craft stalls for lace, traditional sweets, and festa decorations. In addition, there will be children’s guided tours and competitions, as well as falconry displays and a ftira presentation. 

“The initiative to mark St. Gregory in this unique way is clearly showing how determined we are to bring our intangible heritage closer to the people, especially children,” Culture Minister Owen Bonnici said. 

The feast dates back to the 16th century, with its modern form established in 1781. It is traditionally held on the first Wednesday after Easter. It is also known for traditions like the “first swim” of the season.

The Ministry placed a strong emphasis on preserving Maltese cultural identity and intangible heritage. The feast will therefore be held in collaboration with local councils, with a focus on engaging children and the public. 

“The Directorate of Culture is committed to strengthening traditions and making them accessible to everyone, including children,” Assistant Director Clifford Galea said. 

The main celebration will take place on 8 April, with activities centred around Żejtun and surrounding areas.
