PL says PN’s energy proposals amateurish; numbers do not add up – minister Dalli

The Nationalist Party’s proposals regarding energy are evidence of a party with no credibility whatsoever in the energy sector, the Labour Party said Monday.

During an amateurish PN presentation, a number of basic mistakes immediately emerged. They miscalculated the savings from energy generated by the panels. In fact, the actual savings would be less than half of what they claimed.

They are saying that with a one-off investment of €60 million, they will save €30 million a year, every year, forever. A basic calculation shows that no investment yields such a return, the PL said.

Above all, even if, for the sake of argument, one were to accept these incorrect figures — namely that families would save around €10 a month — this would still not represent 30% of people’s bills.

This morning, the confusion also continued over subsidies. While, this morning, at the same table, Alex Borg told us that they would expand subsidies, just a week ago their finance spokesperson said they would remove subsidies and still reduce bills, the PL said.

During the same press conference, the energy spokesperson said they would reduce subsidies, while Alex Borg said they would keep them. Borg had, until recently, said that subsidies are “short-lived”.

The Nationalist Party has no credibility in the energy sector, when these are the same people who raised electricity and water bills at a record rate and blamed international oil prices, the PL said.

In a message on Facebook in reply to the PN’s press conference, Minister Miriam Dalli said that the numbers presented by the Nationalist Party “do not add up”. She also highlighted the PN’s confusion as to whether energy subsidies will be maintained by a Nationalist government.
