PM Robert Abela notes stronger private sector commitment to environmental transition

Prime Minister Robert Abela has highlighted growing private sector engagement in Malta’s environmental transition, during an event marking the official launch of Changan vehicles on the local market. He said that the introduction of this new automotive brand aligns with the Government’s long-term vision for the future of transport, which is being shaped by technology, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.

Abela reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to supporting the green transition through concrete measures, including incentives for the purchase of new electric vehicles. He stressed that these schemes are designed to ensure that sustainable transport options remain accessible to both families and businesses.

The Prime Minister explained that these initiatives form part of a broader national strategy aimed at addressing climate change. Malta, he said, is investing in cleaner transport, renewable energy, and more innovative infrastructure to reduce emissions, improve air quality, and enhance the overall quality of life of Maltese and Gozitan citizens. He added that these efforts are closely aligned with Vision Malta 2050, which places sustainability, innovation, and resilience at the core of national development.

Abela also noted that nine out of every ten new vehicles entering the Maltese market are now powered by alternative energy, describing this as clear evidence of rising public awareness and changing attitudes towards sustainable mobility.

Changan Automobile has an established international presence and continues to expand its operations in manufacturing, research, and development. The first model being introduced locally is the Changan Deepal S07, with additional models planned for future release.
