PN promises stronger support for social partners under new government

PN Leader Alex Borg has pledged that a future Nationalist government would strengthen workers and businesses by investing more heavily in social dialogue and supporting the organisations that defend workers’ rights and represent employers.

Speaking during a visit to UĦM Voice of the Workers in Floriana, Borg announced two key measures aimed at giving social partners more resources and a greater role in shaping Malta’s labour market and economic future.

The first proposal involves increasing financial assistance and resources for social partners, including unions and organisations representing workers, businesses and other sectors of society. 

Borg said the aim is to ensure these organisations can continue operating professionally, independently and effectively while contributing meaningfully to national discussions.

The second measure is the creation of a dedicated fund for research, policy analysis and the development of labour market solutions. 

Borg said that the fund would support efforts to modernise Malta’s labour market and improve the country’s competitiveness and productivity.

He said the initiative would help address major challenges facing the country, including shortages of skilled workers, low productivity, the growing need for new skills, work-life balance concerns, and the impact of technological change on both businesses and employees.

During the meeting, Borg said that dialogue with social partners is essential for building a strong economy, a modern labour market and a better quality of life for Maltese and Gozitan families.

He praised UĦM for its long-standing contribution to Malta, saying the union had played a crucial role in safeguarding workers’ rights and strengthening the country’s social fabric.

“Many of the rights and protections workers enjoy today are the result of the work, perseverance and commitment of unions over the years,” Borg said.

The PN leader said that economic success should not only be measured through statistics, but by the quality of life experienced by people in their daily lives.

He also criticised the current government’s handling of the economy, saying Malta faces serious challenges including excessive bureaucracy, low productivity, rising technology-related costs and increasing pressure on workers trying to balance employment and family responsibilities.

Borg said that such challenges cannot be solved by government or social partners acting alone, but require collaboration and shared national direction.

“That is why a new Nationalist government will work hand in hand with social partners, assist organisations in their work, reduce unnecessary pressures, and create an environment where workers, families and businesses can succeed together,” he said.

He added that the proposals form part of a broader vision for stronger social dialogue aimed at boosting investment, improving working conditions and building a more sustainable economy.

Borg said that under his leadership as Prime Minister, policymaking would be shaped through consultation with workers, unions, businesses and social partners rather than being directed solely from the Office of the Prime Minister.

He described the PN’s vision as a fresh start built on respect, dialogue, stability and national unity, with progress benefiting workers, businesses and families alike.

Also present during the meeting with UĦM were PN candidates Joe Aquilina, Ivan Castillo and Errol Cutajar.
