PN will safeguard traditional hobbies, Alex Borg pledges

Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg stated that a PN government will retain and safeguard all national hobbies, noting that they are crucial to Maltese identity and culture.

During a party activity on Wednesday evening, Borg addressed PN supporters in Mqabba following interventions from the PN candidates contesting the fifth district in this coming general election.

Borg said that in Mqabba and nearby localities, he has met many citizens who have “traditional hobbies.” He said that “irrespective of what the hobby is,” these pastimes are used by many to escape from the stresses of everyday life.

Borg committed that the Nationalist Party will not only safeguard all hobbies in the country, but it will further strengthen them.

The PN leader did not namedrop any traditional hobbies in particular, though the evening prior, PN MP Charles Azzopardi told party supporters in St. Paul’s Bay that the Nationalist Party will support hunters and trappers. Azzopardi had used the same rhetoric in his speech as Borg on this evening; that it is important to protect Maltese hobbies, even to help local citizens combat mental health struggles.

 

‘Convince the undecided to be the catalysts for change,’ Borg says

Alex Borg called upon his party’s supporters to convince all those who are still unsure on who they will vote for, come voting day on 30 May, to vote for the Nationalist Party.

Saying that his party is being more positive in its politics than its rival Labour Party, he advocated for his party loyalists convince floaters and everyone else still pondering their vote to vote for the PN’s candidates.

“Convince them to be the ones to bring change to the country. Convince them to participate in this general election. Convince them not to let others decide for them, but for them to decide our future for themselves,” Borg appealed.

Borg made this plea with just over a week left in this election campaign, before Silent Day and voting day. Crucially, early votes will be available to be casted by those who will be away on voting day this weekend, on Saturday, 23 May. Early voters have till Friday, 22 May at noon to advise the Electoral Commission on their intention to vote early.

During his speech, Borg listed several of his party’s proposed measures, such as its commitments to empower voluntary organisations and people’s ability to donate money to them; its pledges to create new economic niches in the country; how it sustainably aims to reduce electricity bills by 30% on average, through a €60 million investment into solar panels; the PN’s plan to make “the first and biggest line” of its proposed mass transport system operable within five years; ensuring that infrastructure is expanded with growing populations to avoid strains, and specifically “another summer of power cuts”; as well as its commitment to enhance public health and support health workers.

Borg said that “we must invest in our health workers” and pledged that a PN government will discuss a new financial package, with stakeholders, for health workers within its first 100 days in power. He said that “they deserve the best working conditions and wages,” and that contrastingly, nurses and midwives were recently “left behind” by government.

He said that this will be paired with the PN’s proposals to develop a network of hospitals “that is no longer under pressure,” that works efficiently, and that people could rely on without delays and with peace of mind. The PN wants Malta and Gozo to have four hospitals: one in Gozo, one in Malta’s north, an expanded Mater Dei Hospital, and “a proper hospital” in place of the Paola Hub.

Wednesday evening’s PN activity was an event organised for citizens in District 5 to meet the Nationalist Party’s candidates for that district. District 5 pertains to Birżebbuġa, Mqabba, Kirkop, Qrendi, Safi, Żurrieq, and Bubaqra.

Contesting District 5 on behalf of the Nationalist Party are Toni Bezzina, Conrad Borg Manché, Duncan Borg Myatt, Miriana Calleja Testaferrata de Noto, Stefan Caruana, Oliver Cini, Owen Sciberras, and Stanley Zammit.
