PN would enshrine Gozo as a region in Constitution, Borg says

Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg has again pledged that a new PN government would recognise Gozo as a region in Malta’s Constitution, as he addressed a political activity in Nadur.

Borg said that Gozo was not merely another stop on the electoral campaign trail, but the island that gave him his roots and shaped his values of family and community.

He said Gozitans did not want politicians who visit the island only before an election, but rather a government that keeps Gozo at the centre of every national decision.

Drawing on his personal experience, Borg spoke about the realities faced by Gozitans, including the challenges of connectivity for students and workers who travel regularly to Malta, as well as the difficulties encountered by Gozitan businesses. He insisted that Gozo must be placed at the heart of national policy.

Borg stressed that Gozo should never be treated as a periphery and said that the PN has always considered the island a priority. Referring to past criticism that Gozo had once been “a desert”, Borg said such comments had hurt him, arguing that previous Nationalist administrations had invested heavily in projects on the island.

Among the projects he mentioned were the Mgarr harbour facilities, the Gozo Channel terminal, Republic Street in Victoria, Triq ta’ Pinu, the Xlendi road, the Gozo General Hospital and the sports complex.

The PN leader said that a government led by him would continue placing Gozo at the top of its agenda. He announced plans for major investment in transport links between Malta and Gozo through European funds, including the acquisition of two new vessels – one dedicated to passengers and another for cargo transport.

Borg also pledged investment in 150 kilometres of roads across Gozo as part of the party’s infrastructure plans.

He said a future PN government would dedicate a €9 million fund for investment in theatres, while reiterating that the party has a clear vision aimed at raising the ambitions of Maltese and Gozitan families, youths, students, elderly people and farmers.

Borg accused the Labour Party of conducting a campaign based on attacks, while insisting that the PN had instead focused on positivity and the contribution of dozens of young people who, he said, were once again believing in Malta and Gozo.

Concluding his address, Borg said the implementation of the PN electoral programme required the support of the Maltese and Gozitan people. He appealed to supporters to convince undecided voters to move closer to the PN in order to “write a new and beautiful chapter for Malta and Gozo”.
