Prime Minister says government will keep bolstering economy sustainably

Prime Minister Robert Abela said that his Labour government will continue to strengthen the economy in a sustainable manner, by focusing on high-level investment that will benefit Maltese and Gozitan businesses and workers.

Abela was visiting a boutique winery, Markus Divinus, on Sunday morning alongside PL Deputy Leader for Party Affairs Alex Agius Saliba, Labour Party CEO Leonid McKay, and the Minister for the Economy, Technology and Strategic Projects Silvio Schembri.

In a statement, the Labour Party said that this visit took place in view of positive economic results that were published in recent days by the European Commission, Eurostat, and S&P Global, which highlighted that Malta is registering the second-largest growth in GDP in the European Union, trailing only behind Denmark, when comparing GDP growth to the previous quarter and to 12 months prior.

Abela said that tourism is the backbone of the Maltese economy and the government must strengthen connectivity between the Maltese islands and new markets through flights.

He said that this is to be done with the aim of attracting quality tourists to the country.

Abela mentioned that as of today, 7 June, flights from New York will begin operating via Delta Air Lines.

The first flight will arrive in Malta on Monday, 8 June. This marks the first US airline to start flying between JF Kennedy Airport and Malta International Airport three times a week.

Markus Divinus owner, Mark Borg, said that he has been cultivating arable land in Siġġiewi, Rabat, and Dingli for over 20 years, in collaboration with local farmers, for different varieties of grapes to be grown to produce local wine.

Borg said that his company produces around 6,000 bottles of wine per year from its vines, some of which have been cultivated between 28 and 55 years ago by farmers.

Borg said that businesses such as his are especially important for tourists visiting Malta for gastronomic experiences – a niche that has been expanding with each passing year.

He added that his business attracts quality tourists, mostly from the United States of America, who are looking for unique experiences.
