Public Works Department to commence regeneration project in Baħrija Square, Rabat, in coming weeks

In the coming weeks, the Public Works Department will commence a regeneration project in Baħrija Square, in Rabat, with a substantial investment of €1.3 million across an area of approximately 2,400 square metres, a statement by the government read.

“This project is designed to breathe new life into this central and important square for the Baħrija community, while enhancing both its aesthetic appeal and functionality.” 

Through these works, the area will be transformed from a space currently limited in its use into one that is more attractive, safe, and accessible to all, the government said.

“The square will be redeveloped into a modern open space that serves as a meeting point for families, residents, and visitors, while improving the quality of life for those living nearby and those who frequent it.” 

“The works will include infrastructural upgrades around the Church, with new and more efficient services that meet present-day needs. In addition, an extensive landscaping intervention will be carried out, which will not only remove overgrown vegetation but also introduce more trees and plants, creating a more natural environment.” 

“Key elements of the project also include the creation of a new and modern parking facility to replace the existing one, which will be better organised and more accessible, with a focus on safety and convenience. Furthermore, new architectural lighting will be installed to enhance the square’s character and beauty, particularly in the evening, while also increasing security. A new reservoir will also be constructed to allow for more efficient water storage and use, marking an important step towards greater environmental sustainability. To further enhance the square’s attractiveness, new fountains will be installed.” 

Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works, Omar Farrugia, stated that: “The Baħrija community had been promised that this square will be regenerated into a public and open space so that the residents of this community can benefit from this investment that we are creating together. Works will begin in the coming weeks to truly provide Baħrija with the open space it deserves.”

Meanwhile, Rabat Mayor Sandro Craus emphasised the importance of this project. “Through this project, we will transform this area into a pedestrian square,” the mayor added, while thanking the Parliamentary Secretariat for turning this vision into reality. 

The rector of Baħrija Church, Fr Ray Francalanza, expressed his satisfaction with the project, noting that the community will have a place to meet. Fr Francalanza also stressed that the project will enhance the beauty of this area, which is so dear to the community. 

All these interventions together are intended to give Baħrija Square a new identity, while respecting its traditional character and strengthening the bond between the community and public space.
