Puttinu Cares Good Friday Night Walk cancelled; government to donate €50,000

The annual Puttinu Cares Good Friday Night Walk has been cancelled because of unsettled weather conditions, organisers announced.

A long-standing fixture in Malta’s Holy Week calendar, the event usually sees thousands of participants set off from Mellieħa at midnight, making their way to Floriana on foot, by bicycle, or even by running.

The 20-kilometre route passes through Xemxija, St Paul’s Bay, Mosta, Lija, Birkirkara, Msida and Sa Maison before ending at the Granaries in Floriana.

Participants traditionally pay a €10 fee to take part, with all proceeds going towards supporting cancer patients and their families, particularly those who require treatment overseas.

Last year, the event drew a record 10,000 participants.

However, organisers said they had taken the difficult decision to cancel the 21st edition of the walk in view of the adverse weather forecast, which includes the possibility of hail.

According to the Meteorological Office, Maundy Thursday is expected to be marked by cloudy skies and rain showers throughout the day, some of which could be thundery.

In a post on Facebook, Prime Minister Robert Abela said that the government will be donating €50,000 to the NGO.
