Repatriation flight for Maltese citizens stuck in UAE to be arranged in coming days, Ian Borg says
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Ian Borg has announced that arrangements are underway to repatriate the majority of Maltese nationals currently stranded in the United Arab Emirates, amid ongoing regional tensions.
Borg confirmed that the government has secured the services of a private airline to operate a special flight from Dubai in the coming days. The flight will assist Maltese citizens who, over recent days, have requested government support to return home.
“If everything goes to plan, and we have peace of mind that this voyage can take place, the flight will depart in the coming days from Dubai airport,” Borg said, noting that preparations are at an advanced stage.
He added that Malta’s embassy will contact affected individuals directly with further details regarding the repatriation process. Borg expressed gratitude to officials within the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, including staff at embassies and consulates across the region, for their efforts in assisting Maltese nationals in the Middle East.
The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that the safety of Maltese citizens remains the government’s absolute priority. “We will continue working to ensure that the Maltese are safe and that they return to our country,” he said.
Borg also thanked the Prime Minister and Cabinet for their support, acknowledging that such operations come at a financial cost but are necessary to provide reassurance to Maltese and Gozitan families awaiting the safe return of their relatives.
Reaffirming Malta’s longstanding foreign policy stance, he emphasised that the country will continue to advocate for peace, dialogue and diplomacy during these critical moments.
