Thefts in Malta drop to decades-low in 2025, Minister says

The number of reported thefts in Malta fell significantly in 2025, reaching the lowest level recorded in decades, according to information provided in Parliament by Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri.

Responding to a parliamentary question from Opposition MP Ivan Bartolo, Camilleri said theft cases declined sharply compared with the previous year. Official figures show that reported thefts dropped by 790 cases, from 5,218 in 2024 to 4,428 in 2025.

Camilleri noted that this figure is even lower than the number recorded during 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions had already contributed to reduced crime levels.

The parliamentary question had specifically asked about the number of theft reports in the locality of Attard. According to the information provided, police registered 45 theft reports in the town during 2025.
