Updated: Red weather warning issued as strong winds set to hit Malta

The Civil Protection Department (CPD) has issued a red weather warning, for Thursday as strong to very strong winds are expected until Friday morning.

The highest alert level warning remains in effect until 6am on Friday and will be renewed as needed.

People are also urged to stay away from shorelines, breakwaters, and coastal zones due to hazardous sea conditions and high waves.

Loose objects outdoors should be secured, whilst driving should be done cautiously, especially in open, exposed areas where sudden crosswinds may occur.

A few weeks ago Malta and Gozo were hit by Storm Harry, which caused damage in expose areas particularly close to the coast.

The Home Affairs Minister, in a statement, said in a statement of its own that weather conditions are expected to reach Force 8 to 10 at certain times, together with rough seas.

 It urged the public to exercise increased caution, said that outdoor items should not be secured or adjusted while this warning is in force as it is unsafe to do so. It urged people to remain alert to changes in weather conditions, follow official instructions and notices issued by the authorities, call 112 in case of an emergency.

 “The Civil Protection Department is prepared to provide all necessary assistance and continues to monitor the situation closely in coordination with other emergency services.” 

Minister Byron Camilleri once again reiterated the appeal for everyone to follow precautionary measures, while reassuring the public that the Disciplined Forces are always prepared to assist families. He also thanked them for the invaluable work they consistently carry out.
