VOCA choir to team up with visiting American chorus for concert at St Lawrence church in Birgu
VOCA choir will be teaming up with the New Hampshire Friendship Chorus of the USA to give a concert at St Lawrence Collegiate Parish Church, Vittoriosa, on Thursday at 6:45pm.
Founded in 2010 by a group of friends with a passion for music and singing, VOCA is a four-voice (SATB) choir. The choir’s distinguishable tight harmonies, dynamic sounds and soulful interpretations make every VOCA performance a joyous musical experience. Most of the musical arrangements for the choir are original and are written by members of the choir themselves, notably the Choir’s co-director, Lara Bonnici. The musical director is Nathalie Camilleri, a pianist and retired music teacher.
Today, VOCA’s versatile repertoire ranges from spiritual and worship music to musicals and contemporary pop music, making VOCA one of the top Maltese choirs today, performing both in Malta and overseas.
The New Hampshire Friendship Chorus of the USA was created to share a love of music and to build bridges of international understanding. Their director is Dr Dan Perkins, Professor Emeritus at Plymouth State University. A passionate advocate for new music, Perkins’ ensembles have premiered over 30 works by composers including Jonathan Santore, Oliver Caplan, Michael Bussewitz-Quarm, and Kim Andre Arnesen.
The New Hampshire Friendship Chorus tours are a careful blend of appreciation for cross-cultural friendship and travel. Their slogan, ‘Sharing Music and Making Friends Around the World,’ perhaps says it best. They feel it is their mission to foster international friendship, understanding and goodwill by sponsoring concert tours to other countries.
Singers of all ages, genders, belief systems, and ethnicities eagerly participate, seeking areas of the world that have fewer opportunities to meet choirs from the United States. They encourage collaboration and participation through joint concerts with local groups, and this is the precisely the aim behind their concert with the VOCA Choir.
Entrance to the concert is free. However, a retiring collection will be held at the end of the concert to help two-year old Maltese Zach in his fight against Joubert Syndrome.
