Wied iż-Żurrieq connected to the national sewage network for the first time ever

The core works on a €3 million infrastructure project in Wied iż-Żurrieq, Qrendi, have been completed by the Water Services Corporation (WSC), the Environment Ministry said on Tuesday.

These works have now connected the Wied iż-Żurrieq area to the Żurrieq sewage network for the first time in its history. The project permanently ends the decades-long dependence on private cesspits that residents and businesses relied on, delivering a landmark improvement to public health and environmental protection in the area.

Progress on the project was reviewed during a site visit by Minister for the Environment, Energy and Public Cleanliness Miriam Dalli, alongside WSC Chief Executive Officer Karl Cilia and members of the Qrendi Local Council, including Mayor David Schembri.

Minister Miriam Dalli described this milestone as a clear example of how infrastructure investment directly improves quality of life while protecting the environment. She noted that Wied iż-Żurrieq had long dealt with the inconvenience and environmental risks associated with cesspits, and that this project addresses that reality permanently, safeguarding the valley, the sea, groundwater, and surrounding communities. “For years, families and businesses in Wied iż-Żurrieq had to rely on private cesspits. This project is about addressing that reality once and for all. It shows our commitment to modern infrastructure that safeguards our valleys, our groundwater, and our communities, while delivering a more sustainable service to residents.”

The works carried out include the commissioning of a new pumping station, the laying of 1.6km of electrical cable to power the pumping station, the renewal of 1km of potable water main, the installation of over 1km of wastewater gravity main, and the laying of more than 4km of wastewater rising main. More than 3,000 square metres of tarmac reinstatement have already been completed across the project area. The wastewater network is now fully commissioned and 100% complete.

CEO Karl Cilia placed the project within WSC’s broader national investment programme, noting that the community is now fully connected to the Corporation’s wastewater network. “This project is part of WSC’s national investment plan of €377 million, which is driving the upgrade of water and wastewater infrastructure across Malta and Gozo. It reflects our commitment to delivering modern, reliable services to every community while ensuring we meet the highest standards of sustainability and environmental responsibility.”

The project forms part of a wider national effort to upgrade Malta’s wastewater systems, reduce pollution risks, and ensure that all communities benefit from reliable and environmentally responsible services. 

Works were carried out in full coordination with the local community, with the remaining tarmac reinstatement expected to be finalised in the coming days. This project represents a long-term investment supporting residents and businesses in Wied iż-Żurrieq for decades ahead.
