Malta<\/a> Tourism Authority’s (MTA) is undergoing a reform in the way its sponsorship scheme works, Minister for Tourism and Consumer Protection Julia Farrugia Portelli announced on Friday.<\/p>\nFarrugia Portelli explained that there are two schemes which are being implemented and are aimed at distinguishing between the two types of major events. <\/p>\n
The Major Events Support Scheme (MTESS) is directed towards large-scale events which attract a lot of tourists who choose Malta as their desired destination. €2 million of the total investment is being injected into this scheme.<\/p>\n
The second scheme, Distinctive Tourism Events Support Sheme (DTESS), addresses other events that might not be the reason why tourists come to Malta, but add value to their trip.<\/p>\n
Applications for both schemes are set to open on 14th August at 2pm, no late applications will be considered by the MTA.<\/p>\n
All applications will be subject to the scrutiny of a newly appointed Independent Evaluation Committee.<\/p>\n
None of the members who make up the committee form part of the MTA, except for the Chairperson who will also chair this board. The Chairman however does not have the right to vote. <\/p>\n
Additionally, every member is obliged to declare if they have any conflict of interest in the particular sector that they will be tackling.<\/p>\n
“There is a clear policy outlining the required procedures which everyone has to abide by. Anyone who tries to pressure people from the Evaluating Committee that will be judging these applications will be disqualified,” the minister said.<\/p>\n
She explained that the MTA is changing its sponsorship scheme in a way that will not tolerate anyone who tries to put any external pressure to fund one person or another wherever or whoever it may come from. <\/p>\n
The Minister appealed for everyone submitting an application to be creative in the events they curate, but not in a way that would make them feel entitled to receive funding from the Authority. <\/p>\n
Applicants must present well studied event proposals that will not only benefit Malta’s economy but also benefit Malta’s international status, such as through international media coverages that showcase Malta’s beauty. “We will also be asking for budget plans to see what effect that event will have on our country. We will consider the timeframe in which these events will take place, and we will consider events that not only occur during the peak season but also in the shoulder months.”<\/p>\n
MTA CEO Johann Buttigieg said that for Malta to maintain its competitiveness, it must see an increase in tourists who prefer to have an active trip by participating in events, rather than the more traditional passive tourist.<\/p>\n
