Insulin pump service launched in Gozo<\/p>\n
The Ministry for Health has launched an insulin pump service in Gozo for the first time, the Ministry of Health said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Health Minister Jo Etienne Abela announced that the service is available at Gozo General Hospital. This marks a decentralisation of specialised diabetes care beyond Malta, as Gozo patients previously depended more heavily on Malta-based services. This new service represents improved healthcare access for Gozitan families.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Health said that nearly €2 million was invested over two years to cover equipment and staff training. This is part of a broader €10 million government investment in Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs).<\/p>\n
The insulin pump introduced is the “Tandem t:slim X2”, which works in synergy with Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) and functions as an “artificial pancreas”. This pump delivers automated and continuous insulin therapy.<\/p>\n
This service is specifically aimed at children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes. According to the Health Ministry, 9 patients under 18 are already benefitting from it. This also extends to patients who develop diabetes after total pancreas removal surgery.<\/p>\n
In addition, a specialised clinic was established at Gozo General Hospital as well as a 24\/7 contact centre for technical and medical support.<\/p>\n
The Ministry said that the long-term aim is to expand the service to all Type 1 diabetes patients.<\/p>\n
