Government to grant Qbajjar Battery to Din l-Art Ħelwa for restoration<\/p>\n
The government has approved the granting of a guardianship deed for the historic Qbajjar Battery in Gozo to environmental heritage NGO Din l-Art Ħelwa, paving the way for the restoration and reopening of the site to the public.<\/p>\n
The announcement was made by Culture Minister Owen Bonnici and Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri following a Cabinet meeting during which the decision was approved.<\/p>\n
Bonnici said the guardianship deed would ensure that Qbajjar becomes restored and accessible to the public, allowing people to enjoy the country’s historical heritage. He described the agreement as a positive example of collaboration between the government and non-governmental organisations, adding that the move represents a step forward for the island of Gozo.<\/p>\n
Camilleri noted that the structure requires substantial restoration. He expressed confidence that the Gozo section of Din l-Art Ħelwa would carry out high-quality work to rehabilitate the site and make it accessible for public use. <\/p>\n
In a statement, Din l-Art Ħelwa Għawdex welcomed the government’s confirmation that it will sign a guardianship deed entrusting the NGO with the restoration, preservation and management of the Qbajjar Battery, in coordination with the Żebbuġ Local Council.<\/p>\n
The Qbajjar Battery, located in Gozo, was built in 1715 by the Order of Saint John as part of a network of coastal fortifications around the Maltese Islands. It is one of only two surviving artillery batteries in Gozo from that period.<\/p>\n
However, the site has suffered extensive damage over the years. In the 1970s, the battery was handed over for private use as a nightclub and disco, during which excavations and additional constructions significantly compromised the structure. In recent years, it has been left exposed to the elements and subject to vandalism, illegal use and dumping, raising concerns about the risk of total loss.<\/p>\n
The NGO noted that as far back as October 2005, the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage had recommended to the Lands Department that the battery be entrusted to Din l-Art Ħelwa to ensure proper maintenance, removal of illegal additions and public access. Despite repeated promises by successive administrations, the transfer remained pending for years while the site continued to deteriorate.<\/p>\n
The organisation also acknowledged the consistent support of the Żebbuġ Local Council and said the agreement reflects a growing sentiment across Maltese society that the country’s heritage should be preserved and made accessible, rather than lost or commercialised.<\/p>\n
